The Spun Honey: The Performance Evolution of the Groveller
Created by shaper Dan Mann for surfer Kevin Schulz, the Spun Honey is a top-of-the-range grovelling board directly inspired by the legendary Spitfire shape. Designed to enhance your everyday sessions and tackle fast or changeable beach breaks, it modernises a tried-and-tested design to deliver progressive and radical surfing, even in small waves.
Design & On-Water Performance
The Spun Honey has been meticulously designed to maximise speed and manoeuvrability:
A sharp Diamond Tail: This tail shape guarantees ultra-responsive turns, excellent lift and smooth transitions. The board is incredibly responsive in the trough whilst remaining perfectly stable at high speed.
An optimised outline: With a slightly rear-set widest point and a tapered profile, it naturally carves into the wave face and generates incredible speed in soft sections.
A hydrodynamic hull: Its deep double concave, which transitions into a more subtle single concave, generates immediate lift and strong forward drive, without ever making the transition from rail to rail feel heavy.
The comparison: Compared to a Sweet Potato, the Spun Honey stands out with a more pronounced rail rocker and a narrower tail. The result? Much tighter turns and a distinctly more performance-oriented character.
Ideal conditions
A true Swiss Army knife for everyday waves, the Spun Honey excels in soft beach breaks with medium-sized waves. It’s the ultimate weapon when conditions are changeable and you need to build speed instantly whilst stringing together tight turns.
Technology & Construction
In terms of construction, the Spun Honey benefits from Firewire’s renowned Helium technology. This ultra-lightweight, eco-friendly core offers an excellent balance between durability and responsiveness. It gives the board ultra-responsive flex and surgically precise control underfoot.
