Lost Formula-1: Matt Biolos’s new ultimate weapon
Looking for the ultimate shortboard to take your surfing to the next level in powerful waves? Look no further. Presented by legendary shaper Matt Biolos, the ...Lost Formula-1 (F1) is the high-performance board that redefines the standards of competitive surfing.
It’s no coincidence that it was precisely with the Formula-1 Round Pin that Brazilian prodigy Yago Dora was crowned WSL world champion in 2025 at Lower Trestles.
The DNA of the Formula-1: A modernised magic formula
The F1 concept is by no means new, but its formula has been completely refined. Matt Biolos started with an old, ultra-efficient shape created over ten years ago for Julian Wilson. He then blended it with the lines of the famous Driver 3.0.
The result? A modern, ultra-fast shortboard designed to attack the top of the wave without compromise.
Why is this board unique?
The Formula-1 conceals some very specific shaping choices beneath its hull:
- A rear-biased outline: The widest point and the volume are shifted towards the rear. This makes the nose very tapered, freeing up the front of the board for surgical-level responsiveness in the trough.
- The ‘V’ deck (Vee Deck): Volume is concentrated in the centre of the board to maintain excellent paddling power, whilst the rails remain thin and sharp to bite instantly into the water.
- A rocker adjusted to the millimetre: Pronounced at the front to prevent the board from digging in during critical take-offs, it flattens out under the rear foot to generate incredible speed.
- An ultra-deep concave: The single-to-double concave generates maximum ‘lift’, ideal for linking tight turns at high speed.
Round Pin vs Squash Tail: Which configuration should you choose?
The Lost F1 comes in two tail options to suit your surfing style:
- The Formula-1 Round Pin (The pros’ weapon): This is the world champion version. It offers total control in critical sections, perfect line control in barrels and fluid turns in powerful or overhead waves.
- The Formula-1 Squash Tail (The all-rounder): More accessible for everyday surfing, this version increases the contact area at the rear. It offers more drive, projection and forgiveness in less-than-perfect waves.
Who is the Lost F1 designed for?
This gem is primarily aimed at intermediate to expert surfers. If you enjoy digging your fins into hollow beach breaks or top-quality reef breaks, the F1 configured as a Thruster (3 fins) will quickly become your best friend.
